Cooking with CBD

CBD has endless benefits for a sweeping variety of conditions and illnesses from chronic pain to treating epilepsy, and acne. Naturally, this amazing medication has made its way into recipes for everything from cocktails to savory meals like pizza. There are even restaurants that are now adding CBD to the favorite dishes at their establishments. I’ll take you through how and why you should make cooking with CBD a part of your daily routine.

What Is CBD?

CBD is a feel-good chemical in the cannabis plant that does not have psychoactive effects. Unlike THC, It will not create the sensation of being “high”. It is safe, non-addictive, and legal in most places.

While deciding what product to buy it’s important to remember that hemp seed oil and CBD oil are not the same. While both are health aids, they have different benefits. Hemp Oil is extracted from the seeds of the marijuana plant while CBD oil is extracted from the flowers, leaves, and stems. Hemp seed oil is mainly used as a protein supplement and does not have the same medicinal qualities as CBD oil.

Why Cook With CBD?

  • It gives you complete control over potency and dosing.
  • Disguises the flavor of CBD in your everyday meals and makes it an enjoyable experience.
  • Can be more cost-effective than buying pre-made edibles.
  • Gives you endless options on how to include it into your routine.

How To Cook With CBD Oil

Beginning to Cook with CBD does not have to be daunting. Some simple steps can lead you through your entry into utilizing this newest addition to the kitchen.

  • Choose a Product: Make sure to read and research the product you’re purchasing. You can see the differences between full-spectrum CBD oil, broad-spectrum CBD oil, or CBD isolate here. Ulitmate CBD Labs is also a great choice for organic, trusted CBD Oil and has a great peppermint flavor that can spruce up your baking.
  • Find a Recipe: I have included some great recipes at the end of this post but there are endless tutorials and recipes online.
  • Calculate Dosage: Now that you have your recipe and your CBD oil it’s almost time to start cooking! Always start with a small dose and see what works well for you. Make sure you know how many servings you’re making so that you can properly dose the CBD per serving. Also, remember to stir well to make sure it’s incorporated evenly.

What Does CBD Oil Taste Like?

CBD oils will all have varying flavors depending on the plant’s age, when it’s harvested and the strain. Most of the time they are earthy, peppery, and taste subtly like citrus or pine. CBD isolate is a different story, and will have almost no taste whatsoever.

A chef in Portland and writer, Rob Meija, have recently joined up and hosted a CBD infused meal to showcase the flavors of CBD oil. They began by slow roasting the cannabis to active the CBD and chopped and Sous Vide packets of the plant for an hour.
“From there we let the packets cool to room temperature, opened them and put them in slowly simmering butters, oils, and honey. After another hour (two hours for the honey which simmers at a lower temperature) we let the liquids cool and then carefully strained them (with multiple strainers) into mason jars and containers being sure to mark quantity and potency. These butters, oils, and honey imparted such amazing flavors to each dish that the results could not have been better.” Says Rob Meija. The dinner had fantastic reviews and everyone loved the educational values of the dinner but more importantly the taste!

Tips On Cooking With CBD

Don’t make those beginner mistakes in the kitchen with some easy tips from a pro.

  • Incorporate Healthy Fats: CBD is fat-soluble, meaning that the body absorbs it best with fat-containing foods. It will be most effective with any of your favorite oils. This can be anything from olive oil to avocado or olive oil.
  • Use A Thermometer: CBD oil does not do well in extreme heats. Recipes that need to be cooked at higher temperatures will not work. CBD begins to degrade at 320 degrees Fahrenheit so if you decide to use it for your hot meals make sure to keep an eye on the heat. If overheated it can become extremely bitter and have different effects on the body.
  • Be Patient: Adding CBD to your food will not be as potent or fast-acting as tinctures or capsules. The first pass effect is a phenomenon that causes the CBD in your food to have to pass through your gut and liver before reaching your bloodstream.
